True to the style of the famous Sangiacomo vineyard Pinot Noir, this wine elegantly opens to a bouquet of red fruit and white flower aromas, with a hint of white pepper in the background, highlighting this wine bright acidity. The mid palate expands into lush spice and mocha notes, followed by raspberry, plum and macerated strawberries. The wines plush mouthfeel and silky tannins encompass the finish, highlighting notes of slate, and fresh earth making this a wine that is drinkable now, yet can age gracefully for several years in the cellar. The fruit from this pedigreed Carneros vineyard results in an elegant wine for those who love Pinot Noir that has elegance and depth, making this a favorite of our wines to sip in the Spring.

Grapes were hand-harvested in mid-September. Harvest happened at might, in order to preserve freshness and fruit integrity. Grapes were promptly brought to our winery, where they were hand sorted, gently de-stemmed, and not crushed. After, 70% of the grapes were placed in small, temperature controlled stainless steel open -top tanks, where they underwent a three-day cold. This winemaking technique is intended to gently extract color and phenolic compounds that contribute to the finished wine's aromatics and texture. The remaining 30% of grapes were fermented in French Oak puncheon barrels (500 liters, or 132 gallons), which gives our winemaker Ana Diogo-Draper, a number of different components to make the final blend. After a 18-day fermentation, the wine was placed in hand selected French Oak barrels, 30% new, where it completed malolactic fermentation and was aged on the lees for 14 months before being racked only once just prior to bottling.
This is our last tenth single vineyard vintage from the famed Sangiacomo Vineyard on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains. The grapes were sourced from a four-acre block of the El Novillero vineyard, and it is a perfect place to showcase the unique style of Pinot Noir from the Los Carneros appellation. El Novillero (meaning amateur bullfighter, perhaps due to the site's history as a cattle ranch) is situated on a hillside slope in the southwest corner of Sonoma Carneros, and is exposed to the cool, foggy temperatures of the Bay where the temperature gap between night and day nurtures great natural acidity. The vines are more than ten years old and the 777 clones on this site produce an elegant feminine pinot noir with spicy perfume, bright red berry flavors and a silky texture that is distinctly Sonoma Carneros in style. The soils are clay/loam series with some small rocks and shale mixture and a 5 ~ 9% slope which provides good drainage capacity for this varietal.
The perfect growing season in Los Carneros AVA, the 2018 vintage was characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the spring and summer that allowed for the ideal growing conditions; consistent and steady. We began harvest on August 21 followed by unseasonably cool weather that allowed for most of the fruit on our Estate to remain on the vine for an additional week or two. This extended hang-time was great for the maturation of flavors and overall quality of the fruit. Harvest kicked into full swing in early September and was completed on October 20, about two weeks later than last year. The combination of a perfect growing season and a long harvest allowed for the fruit to demonstrate clean, mature flavors with wonderful balance and acidity. The 2018 wines will show great elegance, yet with concentrated flavors that possess finesse for years to come.
