TASTING NOTES
This Limited Release Merlot demonstrates the incredible potential of this grape varietal in Napa Valley. It presents concentrated aromas of cherry, boysenberry and blueberry, layered with hints of mocha, aniseed and vanilla. Similar flavors delight the palate, enhanced by firm structure and concentration. The tannins are silky and gracious, granting the wine a delightful texture.

WINEMAKING NOTES
Varietal Composition: 100% Merlot
Technical Data: ALC: 14.6% by vol.; TA: 7.1 g/L; pH: 3.30
Cooperage: 100% French Oak Barrels (40% New)

The grapes for this wine were hand harvested at night and brought to the winery in the early morning, in small bins. The fruit was hand-sorted, all the way down to individual berries that were promptly placed into temperature controlled fermentation tanks where they completed approximately 20 days of fermentation. The wine completed secondary fermentation and was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels (40% new).
VINEYARD NOTES
We used Merlot grapes from the Oak Knoll AVA, which is located in the southern part of Napa Valley, which sees relatively cooler temperatures than the appellations upper in the valley. This means that grapes can hang longer on the vines, reaching their full flavor development, while retaining their natural acidity. This additional hang time, while very good for grape quality, requires attentive viticulture practices to ensure the fruit gets just the right amount of sunlight and water. Practices such as morning side leaf removal, which allows the morning sun to penetrate the vine but protects clusters from the harsh afternoon sun, and irrigation control, which helps maintain a healthy canopy of leaves, are crucial to getting our Merlot grapes to optimal ripeness.
VINTAGE NOTES
Bud break arrived early this year, beginning around Valentines Day, and it was a cool and foggy season through August. We had no excessive heat in July, August or September, which provided for a longer hang time for the grapes. The grapes ripened uniformly and calmly at their own pace, yields were a tad higher, and the flavors are phenomenal.
