The 2018 Malbec shows the great potential of Alexander Valley to produce world class Malbec. The rocky soils allow the grape to develop its signature intense color, and the well-drained soils allow for even ripening and pure flavor wrapped in structured tannins. This 100% Malbec showcases notes of violets, lavender, and raspberries. Following on the palate are distinct flavors of black currant, boysenberry and blueberry. Rounding out the palate is luscious bright cherry, followed by plum and lavender notes. The supple tannin structure and stellar acidity make this wine approachable in its youth, but will also stand up to the test of becoming an age-worthy wine.

The grapes for this wine were hand harvested in the early morning and quickly brought to the winery in small bins. The fruit was hand-sorted and fermented in two different vessels. About 30% of the grapes were fermented in large puncheon barrels, which allowed them to integrate with the new oak tannins and achieve warmer fermentation temperatures allowing optimum extraction, flavor development and color stabilization. The remaining fruit was placed into stainless, temperature-controlled fermentation tanks for a three-day cold soak and followed by approximately 25 day fermentation. During fermentation, our skilled cellar crew performed two pumpovers a day, in order to extract color and phenolics from the grape skins. The grapes were gently pressed, to grant tannins a luscious profile. These individual fermentation lots were aged separately in 100% French Oak barrels (30% new), for about 22 months, and then blended, to create a well-balanced, structured Malbec.
The Malbec grapes sourced for this wine came from on single vineyard block, in the Alexander Valley AVA, Sonoma County. Ideal growing region for Bordeaux varieties, like Malbec, the summer daytime temperatures regularly reach the high 80s and 90s, while the evening fog creates a rapid cooling effect that protects the fruits flavor and boosts acidity. The extremely rocky, well-drained soils of this particular vineyard produce grapes that are small, with intense concentration of flavor and color.
The perfect growing season in California, the 2018 vintage was characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the spring and summer that allowed for the ideal growing conditions; consistent and steady. We began harvest on August 21 followed by unseasonably cool weather that allowed for most of the fruit on our Estate to remain on the vine for an additional week or two. This extended hangtime was great for the maturation of flavors and overall quality of the fruit. Harvest kicked into full swing in early September and was completed on October 20, about two weeks later than the previous year. The combination of a perfect growing season and a long harvest allowed for the fruit to demonstrate clean, mature flavors with wonderful balance and acidity. The 2018 wines will show great elegance, yet with concentrated flavors that possess finesse for years to come.
