The fruit from this pedigreed Rutherford vineyard results in a complex wine that is aged in French oak barrels for twenty two months. This unique red blend has an unparallel aromatic intensity, with layers of black currant, cassis and blackberry, along with aniseed, mocha and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate the wine is beautifully balanced, with incredible mid palate, offering flavors of dark cherry, cassis and plum, with a hint of spice. The bright layers of fruit combine with well-integrated oak nuances for a wonderfully, long finish.

The grapes for this wine were hand harvested in the early morning by hand and quickly brought to the winery. The fruit was hand-sorted, all the way down to individual berries that were promptly placed into small 3 tons temperature controlled fermentation tanks, where it went through a 3 day cold soak. The Petit Verdot grapes were all fermented in Puncheon barrels, to add structure and enhance the intense dark fruit of this unique varietal. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were fermented for 21 days, with twice a day pumpovers and 3 delestage to intensify the fruit, soften the tannins and stabilize the color. The Petit Verdot grapes fermented for 30 days in their puncheons, with 3 punchdowns a day. The wine went to 100% french oak barrels, combination of puncheon and Bordeaux barrels, where it completed secondary fermentation and was aged for 22 months. During the final blending process, we were so impressed by the quality of the Petit Verdot grapes, that we decided to blend in 36% of this varietal, and therefore, making the 2015 vintage of our beloved Morisoli-Borges vineyard a red blend instead of a Caberent Sauvignon. The result is a unique wine, with all the classic notes of a cab, but with the added layer of intensity that only a Petit Verdot can give.
Morisoli-Borges vineyard is located on the west side of Hwy 29, south of Niebaum lane in Rutherford, Napa Valley. The Morisoli family started farming in Napa Valley in the 1950s and purchased this vineyard in 1971, third generation grower, Mike Morisoli, continues to farm the historic vineyard in the heart of Rutherford. The soils are derived from alluvium and igneous rocks.The characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon from this great vineyard are a layer of elegant fruits, velvety tannins that melt on the palate, and an incredible balance that makes the wine stand by itself.
This vintage will be remembered for high quality, but low yields. The 2015 growing season started out with unseasonably warm temperatures in the late winter and early spring. This resulted in an early bud break and bloom. Colder temperatures in May (during the peak of bloom) caused uneven fruit set which ultimately resulted in a much smaller crop in 2015, compared to the three abundant years that preceded it. As a result, our winemaker workedhand-in-hand with our vineyard crews and also employed new technologies, like optical sorting, to ensure we picked and crushed only the best quality grapes. The harvest was one of the earliest on record in Napa Valley, beginning on July 31st with the picking of grapes for our sparkling wine program, and concluding for us October 22nd. While ongoing drought was of great concern, we were fortunate to have received enough rain in the winter to fill our reservoirs.
