The 2018 Hyde Chardonnay captures the essence of Hyde Vineyards, with stunningly fresh acidity and minerality. By picking the grapes based on flavor and acidity, we can obtain a Chardonnay that is bright and well balanced, with great concentration of fruit. The nose is soft and elegant with complex aromas of honey suckle, stone fruit and jasmine blossom evolving in the glass. Mouthwatering acidity highlights flavors of white peach and lychee supported by a perfect balance of oak in the back palate, softening the bright acid and giving way to a lingering finish.

The grapes are harvested during the very early hours of the morning, to guarantee the grapes get picked at cooler temperatures, allowing for better acid, sugar levels, as well as aromatics. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, using a slow cycle that gently presses the must rendering clean juice with few solids. Winemaker Ana Diogo-Draper placed the juice into 3 distinct vessels - French oak Puncheon barrels (25% new oak), concrete tanks and stainless steel drums. Fermenting, and ageing, the wine components is such different vessels, granted us with various texture and fruit profiles. Barrels are placed in a specially designed igloo, in our Barrel Room, so the juice ferments at a low temperature. This technique allows us to retain the highly volatile aroma
components, and therefore, produce a wine that has an intense aromatic profile. After primary fermentation, 50% of the lots went through malolactic
fermentation to balance the beautiful bold natural acidity that the vineyard
offers. The wine aged on its lees, never racked for 9 months. At that point, we assembled the final blend and bottled it.
Hyde Vineyard is located in the heart of Los Carneros, Napa Valley, on the south side of Hwy 12. The 72 acre vineyard was planted in 1979 by Larry Hyde. The passion of the Hyde family for this renowned vineyard along with forward thinking resulted in planting new clones of chardonnay and experimenting with row directions. This combination also allows the family to consistently look forward into the future with the goal of producing high quality grapes that make stunning wine, and farm accordingly. The care that is given this vineyard is part of the reason we were drawn to it and decided to create a single vineyard designated Chardonnay that showcased the qualities and prestige of the fruit that we sourced.
The perfect growing season on our Estate, the 2018 vintage is characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the spring and summer that allowed for the ideal growing conditions: consistent and steady. We began harvest on August 21 followed by unseasonably cool weather that allowed for most of the fruit on our Estate to remain on the vine for an additional week or two. This extended hangtime was great for the maturation of flavors and overall quality of the fruit. Harvest again kicked into full swing in early September and was completed on October 20, about two weeks later than last year. The combination of a perfect rowing season and a long harvest allowed for the fruit to demonstrate clean, mature flavors with wonderful balance and acidity. The 2018 wines will show elegantly yet with concentrated flavors that possess so much finesse for years to come.
